A Food Crawl Through Jalan Besar’s Shophouses

The walking is easy — the whole neighbourhood is ten minutes end to end. The timing is what ruins crawls here. Four routes built around verified last-order times, from a kitchen on the street.

A food crawl through Jalan Besar is not a distance problem. From the top of Tyrwhitt Road to the bottom of Jalan Besar is about ten minutes of flat walking, and every venue below sits inside that. We do it in kitchen clogs.

It is a timing problem. This neighbourhood’s kitchens stop earlier than their reputation suggests, they stop at different times from each other, and two of them stop early on days you would never guess. Crawls here fail on the clock, not on the map.

So this is a crawl guide organised around hours rather than hype. The venue write-ups live in our Jalan Besar food guide, the drinking detail in the bars guide and the daytime places in the café trail. What follows is the running order. Every hour quoted was first confirmed on the venue’s own website on 20–21 August 2026 and re-checked there on 7 October 2026.

The one rule that governs every crawl here

Last orders on this street start landing at 9pm. Chye Seng Huat Hardware stops taking them at 9pm Sunday to Friday, 9.30pm on Saturday. Papi’s Tacos runs to 11pm and no longer publishes a last-order time (it read 9.30pm in August), so ask when you sit down. Red Eye Smokehouse closes at 10.30pm Tuesday to Saturday and 9.30pm on Sunday. We serve dinner until 11pm.

After that there is exactly one serious kitchen still going: Swee Choon, whose own site gives Sunday to Thursday 7am–2am (last orders 1.30am) and Friday, Saturday and eve of public holiday 7am–4am (last orders 3.30am). Not the 6am you will read elsewhere. Plan the end of your night around 2am and you will never be disappointed.

Which means a crawl here has to start earlier than most people expect. Six o’clock is not eager. Six o’clock is correct.

Route one: the three-hour evening

The default, and the one we would recommend to anyone doing this for the first time. Friday or Saturday.

  • 5.15pm — Chye Seng Huat Hardware, 150 Tyrwhitt Road. Their own site says The Courtyard “becomes a beer garden after 5pm”. Start outdoors with one drink. Do not eat much.
  • 6.30pm — dinner, somewhere on Tyrwhitt or Hamilton. Papi’s Tacos at 149 Tyrwhitt if you have not booked; Red Eye Smokehouse on Cavan Road if you want smoke; us at 29 Hamilton Road if you want charcoal and mezze. Yes, that last one is our own address — we are not going to pretend otherwise.
  • 8.45pm — one more, close by. Druggists at 119 Tyrwhitt for beer and natural wine, with its hours below.
  • Midnight or later — Swee Choon. Dim sum in a room built for 1am. This is the correct ending and there is no second candidate.

Druggists’ hours: their own about page lists Monday and Tuesday 5pm–12 midnight, Wednesday to Friday 4pm–12 midnight, Saturday 3pm–12 midnight and Sunday 3pm–10pm, and the homepage now says “Open Daily”. (Update, 4 October 2026: this used to be a caveat, because the homepage said “daily except Mondays”; the two pages now agree.)

Route two: the all-day Saturday

The version that uses the whole neighbourhood, and the reason we think this street beats the more famous ones for a full day out.

  • 8.30am — bread. La Levain at 23 Hamilton Road opens at 8am (their own hours: Tuesday to Sunday and public holidays 8am–6pm, except Wednesday, which closes at 4.30pm). Chye Seng Huat also opens at 8.30am if you want coffee first.
  • 11am — a proper coffee sit-down. The café trail has the full list, including which addresses we could and could not verify.
  • 12pm — the seven-hour happy hour. Papi’s runs happy hour daily from 12pm to 7pm at $10++ on Singapore Lager draught, frozen lime margaritas, house wine and house pours. That is not a typo, it is a business model. Alternatively, Red Eye does lunch 12pm–3pm.
  • 3pm — the dead hour. Everything mid-afternoon here is either a café winding down or a kitchen resetting between services. This is the hour to walk the shophouses, look at the Art Deco facades, and let lunch settle.
  • 5pm — the handover. The bakeries shut, the courtyard turns into a beer garden, the restaurant kitchens light their fires. It is the most reliable moment of the day around here.
  • 7pm — dinner, booked. Saturday is the one night everything on this street fills. Book it in the morning or take what is left.
  • Late — Swee Choon, 4am on a Saturday.

Route three: the Sunday version, which is shorter than you think

Sunday quietly contracts. Red Eye closes at 9.30pm instead of 10.30pm. Chye Seng Huat’s last orders are 9pm. Druggists’ own about page has it closing at 10pm, three hours earlier than its Saturday.

So compress: brunch late morning — ours runs Saturday and Sunday, 11am to 2.30pm — then an afternoon, then an early dinner at 6pm rather than 8pm. If you want to end late, Swee Choon is still there until 2am, and it is the same room it is on a Friday, only calmer.

Route four: Monday, which does not exist

We will not pad this out. On a Monday, La Levain is closed, Frontyard is closed, Red Eye is closed, we are closed, and Chye Seng Huat is closed on the first Monday of the month. Swee Choon is open from 7am to 2am, and Druggists from 5pm to midnight, and that is your crawl.

If that sounds like an unusually well-coordinated day off, it is — we wrote about why so much of this neighbourhood shuts on the same day, and the short version is that live-fire kitchens and small teams need one honest day for maintenance and rest.

Crawl maths: how much to order at each stop

This is the part most crawl guides skip, and it is the part that decides whether you enjoy stop four.

Our own kitchen is built around small plates, so portioning for a table is something we think about every service — and it goes wrong in both directions. The working numbers we would give a friend: at a crawl stop, order roughly half of what you would order if that stop were the whole evening. Two or three dishes between two people, not five. Split one drink instead of ordering two. Leave hungry — that is the entire point of a crawl and it is the discipline nobody has.

The corollary is that a crawl costs more than a single dinner, not less, because you pay a service charge four times and you drink at every stop. If you want the arithmetic on what a full dinner at ours actually comes to, we have written that down honestly rather than making you guess.

The route in walking order

North to south, roughly, so you are never backtracking:

  • Frontyard — 11 Sam Leong Road, #02-08/09
  • Chye Seng Huat Hardware — 150 Tyrwhitt Road
  • Papi’s Tacos — 149 Tyrwhitt Road (directly opposite)
  • Antea Social — now at 117 Owen Road (tea; Tuesday to Sunday 11.30am–7pm, closed Monday, walk-in only). Updated 6 October 2026: this used to read 9 Tyrwhitt Road; its own site now gives Owen Road, which is off this line, so treat it as a detour towards Farrer Park rather than a stop in this order.
  • Druggists — 119 Tyrwhitt Road
  • La Levain — 23 Hamilton Road
  • Habibi-san — 29 Hamilton Road (that is us)
  • Red Eye Smokehouse — 1 Cavan Road
  • Swee Choon — 183 to 193 Jalan Besar

Nearest stations are Bendemeer on the Downtown Line for the Hamilton Road end and Lavender on the East–West Line for the southern edge; the Lavender guide covers the walk in from that side, and the Farrer Park guide covers what happens if you keep going north instead.

If the crawl only has one stop

Then we would like it to be us, and we will say that plainly rather than pretending to be neutral. Habibi-san is Japanese–Middle Eastern cooked over charcoal at 29 Hamilton Road: mezze, small plates, a grill section, dinner Tuesday to Sunday 5pm–11pm and brunch on both weekend days. The menu is online and the room is in the gallery.

It is a shophouse on a quiet street and people walk straight past it, so it is worth reading how to actually find the door before you set off. And if there is football on at the stadium up the road, the timing changes completely — we have worked out the match-night version separately.

When you have picked your route, book the dinner stop. Everything else on this street you can walk into. Dinner on a Friday or Saturday, you cannot.

Every opening hour in this post was checked against the venue’s own website on 20–21 August 2026, and re-checked on 7 October 2026 (Antea Social’s on 6 October): Chye Seng Huat Hardware, Papi’s Tacos, Red Eye Smokehouse, Druggists, Swee Choon, La Levain and Frontyard were all unchanged. Hours change — if a stop is critical to your plan, confirm it with the venue.
